Living with a recovering addict can be confusing, difficult and overwhelming at times. However, there are some things you can do to help yourself and the recovering addict in your home. By doing these things you will give yourself more peace and sanity. You will also give the recovering addict in your home a better chance at preventing a relapse. Is addiction genetic? If so, do these things as soon as you can so the recovering addict knows you are there for them.

Give the Support That is Needed

First and foremost, it is important to recognize and admit that their addiction was not caused by you. It is going to be difficult to give the support that is needed if you are blaming yourself for their addiction. Recovering addicts go through many emotions that are extremely tough. They don’t need someone to interfere and make everything better. They need someone who will support them and be there for them. You can listen to them vent, work through the steps with them or just listen to them. Is addiction genetic? If so, you may be the rock they need.

Don’t Try to Control Them

Is addiction genetic? If it is, the recovering addict you are living with may have a confused sense of control as it is. You may want to control everything they do but that isn’t reasonable or possible. It is important that you learn they need to figure things out on their own. They need to make their own choices and face the consequences, good or bad, that go along with that. When in recovery, they need to take it one day at a time. If they have someone who is trying to control them, they aren’t going to be able to do that.

Get Help for Yourself

Some people believe that it is only the recovering addicts who need to get help. However, the truth is if you are living with an addict, you may need some help as well. It is alright to admit that you have no idea what you are doing when it comes to living with someone in recovery. That is alright because there are others who are just like you. Get help and go to a support group for loved one’s or friends of addicts.

These are some of things you can do to help a recovering addict. Make a plan to begin these things as soon as possible.
