Either way, it is never easy to have a parent who has an addiction. The first thing you must know is that you are not the only one. There are others you can connect with you have addicted parents. Know That it is Not Your Fault

Many people who have an addicted parent start to blame it on themselves. Some even go as far as to think that if they weren’t born; their parent wouldn’t have an addiction. No matter what type of blame you put on yourself or how much you put on yourself, you must know that your parent’s addiction is not your fault. You did nothing wrong that would force them into an addiction. It doesn’t matter if you acted out a lot or even if you got into a lot of trouble as a kid. You are not responsible for your parent’s addiction. The first thing you can do to help an addict who is a parent is to know that it is not your fault.

Have Another Role Model

If your parent is addicted to drugs, you should have another role model in your life. You don’t need to feel bad about having another role model either. If your parent is addicted to drugs or alcohol, they can’t fully be there for you like they should be. That is not your fault and you deserve to have someone you can look up to. Having another role model in your life is a way you can help an addict. You are helping by showing the addict you can grow and stay safe, even if they aren’t providing you with that environment at that time.

Taking Care of Yourself

You should also take care of yourself when you have a parent who is addicted to drugs. If you want to help an addict, taking care of yourself shows them you are responsible and you can handle things. Now this does not mean you should do things all on your own. It just means that you get to decide where your life turns and it doesn’t have to include being swamped into your parent’s addiction.
